EDITING ON THE ROAD

At the February meeting we will have three video capture and playback devices to compare; devices that can all work off a MacBook Pro at full HD allowing you to take your edits “On the Road”:

AJA Video Systems IoXT – This is it, this is the dual Thunderbolt ioXT that allows your Thunderbolt MacBook Pro (or Thunderbolt iMac) to do everything your Mac Pro can do with an AJA card installed. With Single and Dual Link SDI; HDMI, including HDMI 1.4a for 3D; Analog component and composite output at 10-bit; hardware based video up, down and cross conversion; RS-422, LTC, headphone and more. Since last NAB Show I have talked about this device at every meeting and it is finally shipping. Best of all, thanks to AJA’s sponsorship, Calgary FCPUG members can get a chance to see one in action and see what it can do, but you have to be at the meeting!

Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 3D Keeping the Thunderbolt train going with the UltraStudio 3D again you can turn your Thunderbolt MacBook Pro or iMac into an editing behemoth. Uncompressed editing in HD, 2K and 3D are all possible. With Single and Dual Link SDI in and out; HDMI in and out (including HDMI 1.4a for 3D support); a breakout cable for extra analog connections, genlock, RS-422, etc; and an international power supply that allows you to take your edit on the road anywhere in the world! See it live at the meeting.

Matrox MX02 Mini – Though much more basic than the AJA and Blackmagic devices in that the MX02 Mini supports HD and SD through HDMI plus analog component, composite and S-video. Again, we will have this at the meeting.

Of course these are not the only products that can turn your MacBook Pro into a Road Warrior editing machine and we will look at the other options available as well comparing features and workflows. On display will be the kit used to take Heartland on the road recently to finish editing season 5. Bring your stories of editing on the road and the problems that need to be overcome.
