HOW AND WHY OF VIDEO ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Micheal Jones, the IT pro at Calgary’s Joe Media Group will look at the considerations when choosing and preparing video for social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo. Learn how to make the best impression possible with your video images.

NEW CAMERAS, NEW CODECS, OLD WORKFLOWS?

With the NAB Show once again upon us we can be sure that there will be a new selection of cameras and codecs introduced while we are still trying to sort through the cameras and codecs that were introduced last year at NAB. How best to work with these new codecs, often more than one at a time in any given project? At this meeting we will talk about the issues to be aware of and options to manage difficult codecs, timecode and audio sync issues.

One option we will look at is to capture directly to a device that uses edit friendly codecs; we will have several options on display to consider for your next shoot:

AJA Ki Pro MiniCapable of recording in all flavours of ProRes 422 from HDMI or SDI onto Compact Flash cards. Very small and mounts to virtually everything. Huge thanks to Applied Electronics Limited here in Calgary for loaning us this item. Note they would als be very happy to help you own one after you have seen it!

Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle 2 – Connects via HDMI or SDI and records Uncompressed HD (or SD) at 10-bit for demanding video or compressed DNxHD MXF for more record time. Uses Solid State Drives (SSD).

Fast Forward Video SideKick HD – Select recording from SDI or HDMI in ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 (HQ) to SSD drives. Device includes a built-in 4.3” monitor. Mounts just about anywhere.

Sound Devices Pix 240 – Records both Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD in QuickTime format to either Compact Flash or Solid State Drives with either SDI or HDMI. Additional XLR audio inputs included.

Bring your camera to the meeting if you would like to try connecting to any of these devices to see the results.
