Welcome to the emotionDV forum. We ask that you do not post questions multiple times because it splits the discussion (I removed your duplicate posting). Thanks for understanding.

You do not specify how you have extracted files from your DVD, but it is your workflow that is the problem. I recommend using Squared 5's MPeg Streamclip, which will properly extract video and audio from a DVD's VOB files and convert them to just about any codec you want to work in.

Keep in mind that extracting video from a DVD, which is in a very compressed format, may result in video artifacts and anomalies. MPeg Streamclip allows you to adjust some settings that may help fix some problems.; it is worth taking the time to learn a little about the software from the Help menu.

HELP!  I'm also having major audio issues and I have a class project that relies on my ability to figure this out!

Okay, I have recently upgraded to QT PRO so that I can download public domain videos from the internet (via archive.org).  After I "save as Quicktime Movie" I can open the file in QT and it plays beautifully as a .mov file (sound and all).

However, when I import the file into my FCE project, it does not have the audio track(s) at all.  No sound whatsoever.  Why is this happening?  It was not happening on the lab computers which seem to have exactly the same setup that I am using?

Thank you so much, in advance, for any and all suggestions you can offer.  This site is incredibly awesome!!

Farrin, there are dozens of reasons you might not be hearing audio from FCE. Is it because you are using an unsupported codec? I don't know the answer to this because you do not tell us what codec your QuickTime movie is. To determine what codec you have open the media file in QuickTime and (depending on the version of QuickTime you are using the exact details vary) Get Info to view codec info and let us know what you see.

First, why not determine if you can hear audio from any FCE project just to be sure we are not barking up the wrong tree. Could you tell us what version QT you are using?

Hi Duane,

Thanks for your help.  The codec is apparently "MPEG2 Muxed".  The site, archive.org/detail/prelinger lists it as MPEG2.  I saved it using QT Pro..."Save as Quicktime Movie".  I am using the newest QT, version 7.4.5 (25) Pro.

And yes, I can see audio tracks as well as hear them with other file formats (such as video of my own).

Please let me know what else I can provide to help me figure this out.  Thanks again!

Thanks for the information. You don't want to be editing MPeg-2 video; take a look in the FCE manual available under Help for "MPeg-2" to learn some reasons why. The best solution for you is the same as the original poster. Download MPeg Streamclip and use it to convert the files to QuickTime DV files which are supported in FCE.
